Aside from the art, this is unironically the worst thing I've ever read.

Jaekyung (who I'll just refer to as J to save space) has a lot of flaws.

I think a good example is in the s** scenes. I’m not gonna too in depth because there's no space, but there's little to no consent in any of the s** scenes and most of the time, Dan (who I'll just refer to as D) was in actual pain.

I’m fine with flaws in characters, as long as we see them as flaws and not just “they’re just like that”. J has never had any consequences for his actions.

In terms of the relationship itself, there’s a clear power imbalance between them, and I don’t just mean physically, but in every way possible.

One, J turned himself into D’s provider/employer, meaning without him, D wouldn’t be able to make enough money to live. Two, D was forced to live with J because his house was destroyed, meaning without him, D would be homeless. Three, he’s indebted to J because he paid D’s loans away and paid for his grandma's hospital bills. The third could almost be seen as kind or loving, except the fact D’s still in debt, but to J instead of the loan sharks or the hospital.

All of this effectively makes D powerless in every way. Meaning regardless of abuse or ra**.. or if he was just unhappy with the relationship, he can’t leave. The fact he has no real way out even if he wanted to leave is extremely toxic in of itself. They lack everything a relationship needs. Human decency? Empathy? Communication? No clue.

I have a lot more to say, but not enough space. Comment if you want more of my complaining.

What's empathy? It's simple, really. A reflex. An adaptative trait acquired to facilitate survival through herd bonds. "I feel bad when I see someone suffer."

You could say it's a criterion to objectively distinguish good and evil. I say that, personally. I always thought that deontologism and utilitarianism were full of shît, to be frank. We have it as a natural compass. A sense. It can intuitively tell you when something is bad, and to hëll with philosophy and rational arguments. All natural, baby, straight from the evolutionary tree.

But poof! It's gone, now. What then? Remember, it's a way to know - no, to feel - good or evil, but its abscence isn't morally evil in itself. What then, tho? There are people like that. Some lack sight, other lack it, in various degrees. It's not rare, at all. Narcissists have dampened empathy. But sociopaths and psychopaths are generally more severe cases.

So it's interesting to see a story trying to characterize a love interest based on this concept. It requires excellent writing to succeed. It helps if the art is hot and stunning enough to make you drool for the sadistic båstard in question. But it can be done.

And here, we see how. This is a game of cat and mouse that reveals its cards slowly. It's not full of twists, and it takes its time in approaching the limits of a psychopath and a really empathic person. It unravels the way even someone with a restricted spectrum of emotional output isn't necessarily a monster. Just someone without a compass. And also abs. Lots of those.

It's painfully slow. Morally dubious. But it can afford it. A GAI (Grand Accolade of Ivern™️) is in order, because it didn't lose me even once nonetheless. The themes are well handled, the patho-psychology of the cast is grounded in reality, the symbology of the narration is rather clever (the idea of a heart being at the center of it all), the evil in it is not gratuitous and also I'm a slüt.

(i guess the plot's raw humanity is nice too)

I didn't like the start, kept reading because I was curious and liked the drawing style. Happy I didn't stop because it got really good.
